Laurel Ridge Homestead is located in Morgan County, Kentucky and borders the Daniel Boone National Forest. We are a small family run homestead farm that produces fresh eggs, fruits, vegetables and fire wood in an organic, sustainable and eco-friendly manner. We are experimenting and just getting started. This blog will be documentation to our learning experience as well as a helpful place for others who are trying to start their own small family farm.
Happy Chickens
The chickens have a roomy pen with room to roam outdoors. We like to open the side door on their pen that leads to the duck area so they have more room to roam, eat wild plants and hunt insects. Sometimes they fly out of that area and into the yard. Some of the hens have ventured to the edge of the forest but they seem afraid to go to far in there. Probably a smart idea since we have numerous predators around. Marley, our chocolate lab, does not try to go after them. She prefers to kill mice, frogs and snakes.
